SASSA Referred Status

A guide to a referred SRD status, why extra verification may be needed, and safe next steps.

Information reviewed 20 September 2026

What Referred Usually Signals

A referred status generally indicates that the application needs additional review rather than an ordinary automated outcome. It can be connected to identity, duplicate or risk checks.

Do Not Share OTPs or PINs

Extra verification does not mean you should give a bank PIN, card PIN or one-time password to a stranger. Use recognised support channels and keep a record of any reference number you receive.

Check Your Personal Details

Confirm that your names, ID details and registered mobile number match the information connected to the application. If a Home Affairs detail is wrong, the underlying record may need correction before the SRD record can match.

When to Contact Support

If the referred result does not change after the requested steps are completed, contact SASSA and ask what verification remains outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is referred the same as declined?

No. Referred generally means extra review is needed.

Can I fix a referred status by applying again?

A duplicate application may not fix the underlying verification issue. Address the reason for referral first.

Should I pay for verification?

SASSA services are free; do not pay a third party to clear a referred status.
